Aromatherapy for beginners

In this blog post I will share how you can get started with aromatherapy if you are new to it. There are some great easy ways to safely incorporate essential oils in your life and enjoy beautiful scents in your home, car or office.

Aromatherapy essential oils are made from different type of plant materials by extracting the essence of the plant. This is done most commonly by steam distillation or cold pressing. Aromatherapy is fairly new therapy form in treatments, but plant materials have been used thousands of years in ceremonial practices, perfumery and beauty care products. One of the most commonly known scents are lavender and rose, but many herbs, flowers, tree materials and even grass are used to make the modern essential oils. There are new ones coming to the market all the time, so there is always something new to explore. Essential oils are potent plant materials and sold usually in small quantities as you would only need a drop or two to experience the beautiful scents.

One of the most powerful senses we have is the sense of smell, even though we don’t always realise how it can have an effect in our lives. Unfortunately the modern nose is quite sensitised as strong synthetic perfumes are most commonly used and at first when you start using natural essential oils they may seem weak. Overtime your nose will recover and you will start smelling things better and need less essence to smell them.

There are some essential oils that have been used for a long time and are considered to be safe, so I would recommend starting your exploration with them. Most herbal oils are considered safe like lavender, coriander or sage. The oils made from tree materials are also gentle like fir, pine, eucalyptus or ever popular frankincense. Start with a few drops until you get used to using them. You can start with a singular essential oil as all of them do smell beautiful on their own as well. Later on when you get used to them, you can try blending a few different oils together and create your own scents.

One of the easiest ways to get the scent in your home is to use an essential oil burner or electric diffuser. You can add a few drops in to the water and experience a beautiful scent in your home. With both of these methods you can just add a few drops of your chosen essential oil. Another easy way to use aromatherapy is to add a few drops of the essential oils to a plain fragrance free base material like oil, shower gel or lotion. Place some of the base material to for example a small pump bottle (100ml) and add a few drops of essential oils. Make sure to shake or mix them well. You can use the shower gel as body or hand wash and the oil or lotion a body moisturiser. This is a great way to experiment different scents.
